In order for MTDBC to perform at its best on Race Day, paddlers go through various training regimens. Some teams train hard year round, while others take a more relaxed approach. Here, you will find some of the traning methods MTDBC takes advantage of.
On the water
From early May to early October, MTDBC takes to the water to concentrate on paddling technique. The teams practice at the Olympic Basin on Île Notre-Dame on Monday and Wednesday evenings, as well as the Lachine Canal on Saturday mornings. Listen out for Maxime’s trademark voice and you’ll have no trouble finding Thunder on the water!

In the winter
The Canadian climate forces MTDBC indoors from October until the end of April. Coach Maxime Lee Larose leads the team in intense weekly workout sessions at the Olympic Park Sports Centre in Montréal’s East End. These sessions are designed to strengthen the core muscles that paddlers depend on in the summer, while giving the most-used muscles a much-needed break.

Off the water
Montréal Thunder Captain Chuck Li has developed an effective training program for paddlers to follow on their off-time, either at the gym or at home. Chuck likes to see his team in motion! Montréal Thunder’s paddlers also participate in a variety of different sports to complement their dragon boat training, such as skiing, cycling, kayaking, long-distance running, soccer, martial arts, volleyball, and basketball, to name a few.

Fitness tests
Montréal Thunder’s paddlers undergo routine fitness tests. These tests are designed to measure each paddler’s strength and endurance.
